What is this crust?

What Is This Crust or Mold on My Hydroton or Soil?

White, green, pink, yellow, orange or dark material can appear on hydroton, soil, coco, fabric pots and hydroponic equipment.

First: don't panic.
It is not necessarily mold — and in most cases, you can simply leave it alone. A small amount of surface crust or growth is usually cosmetic if the plant is otherwise healthy.

Does the plant look healthy?

If yes, there is a very good chance that you do not need to do anything.

Small amounts of fertilizer salts, hard-water deposits, algae and harmless surface fungi are extremely common around growing media and hydroponic equipment.

Identify it, keep an eye on it, and leave it alone unless there are other warning signs.

Touch It

Texture usually tells you more than colour. What does the material actually feel like?

Dry, Hard or Chalky

Crumbly, gritty, powdery or crystalline.

Most likely: fertilizer or mineral buildup.

Soft or Fuzzy

Cottony, web-like or made of visible threads.

Most likely: fungal growth.

Green & Slippery

Flat film that becomes darker or slimier when wet.

Most likely: algae.

Thick & Slimy

Especially concerning if accompanied by an unpleasant smell.

Possible biofilm or root-zone problem.

Why are some fertilizer crystals coloured?

Mega Mass, REMO Nutrients, Advanced Nutrients, GreenPlanet and other fertilizer manufacturers may use harmless dyes to identify particular formulas or parts of a nutrient system.

When nutrient solution reaches a surface and the water evaporates, some of that identifying colour can remain in the fertilizer crystals.

This can create faint green, blue-green, pink, purple or yellow deposits.

The colour itself is not a contaminant and is not inherently dangerous.

Do not identify a deposit by colour alone. Texture, location and plant health usually tell you more.

Still Not Sure? Try Water

Remove a small sample first.
Do not perform experiments directly in the plant's pot or reservoir.
What Happens? Possible Explanation
Dissolves quickly Soluble fertilizer salts
Softens but remains chalky Hard-water mineral scale
Remains fuzzy or threaded Fungal growth
Becomes slippery Algae or biofilm
Swells into jelly Cyanobacterial growth or water-retaining polymer
Remains separate white chunks Perlite or another growing-medium particle

This is a simple screening test, not a laboratory identification.

Check the Plant

Probably Cosmetic — You Can Usually Leave It Alone

If the plant looks healthy and the deposit is minor, you generally do not need to remove it or treat it.

  • The plant is growing normally
  • The roots are firm
  • There is no unusual smell
  • The deposit is small
  • It is mainly appearing where water evaporates
  • It accumulates slowly

In these cases, leaving it alone and keeping an eye on the plant is usually all that is necessary.

Investigate Further If You See:

  • Burned leaf tips or margins
  • Stunted growth
  • Wilting while the growing medium is still wet
  • Thick crust that returns rapidly
  • Constantly wet growing media
  • Repeatedly clogged emitters
  • Soft brown or mushy roots
  • Sour or rotten smells
  • Stem rot at the soil line
  • Slime throughout the reservoir

What Should You Do?

Small Amount of Fertilizer or Mineral Crust

You usually don't need to do anything.

If the plant is healthy, a little mineral or fertilizer crust can simply be left alone.

If you want to clean it up, or if it begins accumulating:

  1. Brush or scrape away loose deposits if desired.
  2. Confirm that fertilizer is being measured correctly.
  3. Water thoroughly when the plant actually needs water.
  4. Allow excess water to drain.
  5. Discard runoff instead of allowing the pot to repeatedly absorb it.
  6. Watch how quickly the crust returns.

Heavy Fertilizer Buildup

  1. Pause unnecessary fertilizer applications.
  2. Check the fertilizer dose.
  3. Check your fertilizer mixing order.
  4. Measure root-zone or runoff EC if possible.
  5. Make sure the container drains freely.
  6. Leach excess salts only if the roots are healthy and drainage is good.
  7. Repot if the growing medium is severely compacted or salt-loaded.
Do not repeatedly flush a plant whose roots are already sitting in saturated soil.

If It Is Algae

A small amount of algae is usually more of a growing-condition clue than an emergency.

  1. Block light from wet hydroton and reservoirs.
  2. Reduce unnecessary surface wetness.
  3. Correct leaking or poorly positioned drippers.
  4. Use opaque tubing and reservoirs where possible.
  5. Clean equipment between crops.

If It Is Fungal Growth

A little surface fungus on organic growing media can also be harmless. Many fungi feed on dead bark, peat, coco, compost and other organic material rather than attacking the living plant.

  1. Remove dead leaves and decomposing surface material if needed.
  2. Allow the surface to dry appropriately.
  3. Improve airflow.
  4. Check drainage and pot size.
  5. Inspect the roots if the plant is declining.
Don't automatically reach for fungicide.
Harmless decomposer fungus generally does not need chemical treatment.

The Bottom Line

Most of the time, you can leave it alone.

A little crust, algae or harmless surface fungus on an otherwise healthy plant is usually cosmetic rather than an emergency.

Dry and crystalline?
Think fertilizer or hard water.

Fuzzy?
Think fungus.

Green and slippery?
Think algae.

Smelly, slimy, spreading rapidly or accompanied by unhealthy roots?
That's when it deserves closer attention.
