Earthly Matters Worm Castings are a natural, Alberta-made soil amendment produced through vermiculture. Also known as vermicompost or worm manure, worm castings contain slow-release plant nutrients, organic matter and beneficial microorganisms that help support healthy soil and plant growth.

These screened worm castings can improve soil structure, moisture retention and nutrient availability without making the growing medium heavy or waterlogged. They are unpasteurized, biologically active, odourless and non-toxic, making them suitable for indoor plants, outdoor gardens and edible crops.

Use Earthly Matters Worm Castings for:

  • Houseplants and container gardens

  • Vegetable and herb gardens

  • Cannabis plants

  • Flowers, roses, trees and shrubs

  • Raised garden beds

  • Seed starting and transplanting

  • New or established lawns

  • Improving potting soil and garden soil

  • Making worm-casting tea

How to Use Worm Castings

Potting soil and soilless mixes:
Mix 1 part worm castings with 3 parts potting soil or growing medium. Worm castings can make up approximately 25% of the finished mix.

Potted plants and houseplants:
Mix castings into fresh potting soil when transplanting, or apply a small layer to the soil surface as a top dressing. Work it gently into the upper layer and water normally.

Vegetables and annual flowers:
Add 25 to 50 mm (1 to 2 inches) of worm castings around the bottom and sides of the planting hole or seed furrow. During the growing season, side-dress with approximately ½ cup per plant or 1 cup per linear foot of row every two months.

Perennials:
Work approximately ½ cup into the soil above the root zone without damaging shallow roots. Apply in spring, early summer and early fall.

Established roses:
Mix approximately 4 cups into the soil around each plant, about 50 to 75 mm (2 to 3 inches) below the surface.

New lawns:
Apply approximately 5 kg per 9.3 m² (100 sq. ft.), work lightly into the topsoil, add grass seed and water well.

Established lawns:
Spread worm castings evenly over the lawn as a natural top dressing, then water.

Worm-casting tea:
Soak 1 part worm castings in 3 parts water for 12 to 24 hours. Stir thoroughly and apply the liquid around the root zone. Casting tea is useful for flowering plants, fruiting plants and containers that are difficult to top-dress.
