Ginseng Bonsai Care Guide:
Ficus microcarpa “Ginseng”
Light
Bright light is essential.
Place in strong, indirect light near a south or east window if possible.
In Calgary, natural winter light is often not strong enough to maintain dense growth.
For best results year-round, use a full-spectrum LED grow light for 10–12 hours per day.
Grow lights help:
- Prevent leaf drop
- Maintain compact growth
- Keep foliage dark green
- Reduce winter stress
Low light is the #1 cause of thinning and decline.
Water
Water thoroughly when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry.
Let excess water drain fully.
Do not allow the plant to sit in water.
Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Temperature
Keep between 16–24°C.
Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature swings.
Never expose to frost.
Humidity
Average indoor humidity is fine.
Keep away from heating vents.
Feeding
Feed once per month in spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer.
Reduce or stop feeding in winter unless under strong grow lighting.
Pruning
Trim new growth to maintain shape and encourage branching.
Ficus respond very well to pruning.
Repotting
Repot every 2–3 years in well-draining soil.
Best done in spring.
Normal Adjustment
Some leaf drop after moving is normal.
Stable light and conditions help it recover quickly.
