Live Plants: Alberta Dwarf Spruce
Thriving in Calgary’s cool, dry climate, the Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca ‘Conica’) grows best in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Keep the soil evenly moist during the first three to five years after planting—deeply water about once per week until the ground freezes in fall. Once established, it becomes cold-hardy and drought-tolerant, requiring only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing dead or damaged branches.
Although extremely hardy, winter desiccation and spider mite infestations are the most common issues. Protect young spruce from drying chinook winds with a burlap screen or windbreak. Watch for browning needles, which may signal winter burn or mites. Treat mites early using insecticidal soap or horticultural oil rather than harsher pesticides. Wrapping the tree in burlap for winter protection is beneficial—it doesn’t need light while dormant.
While your Dwarf 'Berta Spruce can temporarily be displayed indoors as a living Christmas tree, it is not a true indoor plant. It requires a cold dormancy period each winter. If brought indoors, keep it cool and away from heat sources, limit indoor time to a week or two, and gradually re-acclimate it outdoors to prevent shock.
