GrowPharm Growing Media - 5kg Coco Coir Blocks\
GrowPharm Premium Coco Coir – 5 kg Block
GrowPharm Premium Coco Coir is a 100% fine coconut coir growing medium made from the processed husk of Cocos nucifera. Also known as coco peat, its fine, peat-like texture provides an excellent balance of moisture retention, drainage and root-zone aeration.
Each compressed 5 kg block expands to approximately 70 litres when fully hydrated, making it an economical growing medium for hydroponics, container gardening, greenhouse production and outdoor growing.
Washed, Low-EC Coco
Coco naturally contains potassium, sodium and other soluble mineral salts, so proper washing is an important part of producing high-quality horticultural coir.
- Washed: EC below 1.5 mS/cm using the 1:5 extraction method
- Super-Washed: EC below 0.5 mS/cm using the 1:5 extraction method
- Specified pH: 5.5–6.5
Independent Laboratory Testing
An SGS laboratory report supplied for a coco peat sample recorded the following results:
| Test | Result |
|---|---|
| Electrical Conductivity | 283 µS/cm at 25°C (0.283 mS/cm) |
| pH | 6.5 at 25°C |
| Moisture | 17.0% |
| Sieve Analysis | 99.0% passing 6.3 mm |
Laboratory results represent the tested sample and should not be interpreted as a guaranteed analysis of every individual production batch.
Why Grow in Coco?
Coco contains very little immediately available plant nutrition compared with conventional soil, allowing growers to maintain close control over their fertilizer program.
Coco is sometimes described as an “inert” medium, but this is not completely accurate. Coconut coir has a natural cation exchange capacity (CEC), meaning it can hold and exchange positively charged nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.
This nutrient-holding ability is one of the reasons coco performs so well as a growing medium, but it is also why proper calcium and magnesium management is important.

Do I Need to Buffer Coco?
Even washed, low-EC coco can benefit from calcium and magnesium buffering before planting.
Washing removes excess soluble salts such as sodium and potassium.
Buffering supplies calcium and magnesium to the coco's exchange sites before plants are introduced.
These are two different processes. Because GrowPharm Coco has already been washed, extensive rinsing should not normally be necessary. Buffering is still recommended when you want more predictable calcium and magnesium availability, particularly with hydroponic or high-demand crops.

How to Prepare GrowPharm Coco
-
Hydrate the block.
Place the 5 kg block into a container capable of holding at least 70 litres. Slowly add clean water and allow the coco to fully expand. -
Break it apart.
Loosen and mix the hydrated coco until the block has completely separated and the moisture is evenly distributed. -
Rinse if desired.
GrowPharm Coco is already washed, so extensive rinsing should not normally be required. An additional rinse can be performed if desired or if your growing method requires an especially low starting EC. -
Buffer with calcium and magnesium.
Soak the hydrated coco in a suitable calcium and magnesium solution for approximately 8 hours. Follow the concentration recommended by the manufacturer of your chosen Cal-Mag product. For most hydroponic crops, a preparation solution around pH 5.8–6.2 is appropriate. -
Drain.
Allow the excess buffering solution to drain. The coco is now ready for planting. -
Add perlite if desired.
GrowPharm Coco can be used on its own or blended with perlite for additional drainage and air space. Approximately 20–30% perlite is common, while higher percentages can be used for faster drainage or more frequent irrigation.
Growing in Coco
Coco is best treated as a soilless or hydroponic growing medium rather than conventional potting soil. Use a complete fertilizer appropriate for your crop and monitor both pH and nutrient strength.
Avoid repeatedly allowing heavily fertilized coco to become completely dry. As water is removed from the root zone, dissolved fertilizer salts become more concentrated, which can increase root-zone EC.
